Understand the Mind of the Interviewer
Understand the Mind of the InterviewerUnderstand the Mind of the InterviewerThe job interview process is really just a series of approvals and referrals.Ultimately you want a job, but broken down to its elements, what you really want is a series of approvals. The job interview process isnt about convincing someone to hire you - not until the final stage, anyway - it is about convincing each individual along the process to approve you to advance to the next stage.And there are more people who can influence your ability to reach the next stage than you think.The Non-InterviewersThere are lots of people who can influence whether or not you will be hired. Every part you meet within a hiring organization, from the receptionist to the CEO, will pass judgment on you. Most of the time, the judgment will be, No opinion one way or the other. There will be other people, however, who very much will have an opinion about you. If theyre not actually interviewing you, you dont need their approval , but you dont want their disapproval.That means you really are on a job interview at all times. A misstep with a non-interviewer such as a receptionist can eliminate your from the process. An off-the-cuff comment can damage your credibility or reputation. Always be on your best behavior, and act professionally and honestly be classy and pleasant.The InterviewersInterviewers play one of two roles approval/disapproval or hiring/not hiring. Either the rolle you are talking to can approve or not approve you to meet with another part in the company, or the person can hire you or decide that you will not be hired.Keep in mind that either way, the interviewers reputation is riding on your behavior as a candidate or as a new employee. If you get to interview with another person, then that person is going to judge the first interviewer on how you behave during the interview. If you get hired for the job, then everyone involved with that role is going to judge the interviewer for how well he judges talent.Be RecommendableJust as it is important actually to be able to do the job for which you are being considered, it is important for you to be recommendable. The primary question running through the mind of the interviewer is, Will I look good if I recommend this person for another interview? Another version of that is, Will I look good if I hire this person for our organization?Your first job, the one that you have to do well in order to get the actual paying job, is to make sure each interviewer feels comfortable in recommending you for the next stage in the hiring process.A Checklist to Become More RecommendableWhat is the most important outcome that this interviewer wants as a result of this interview? Does he want to refer you for a second interview or hire you?What is this interviewers personality and decision-making style? (Is the person a quick decision maker, an emotional decision maker, a logical decision maker or a conscientious decision maker?) Understand how to meet the needs of the different types of decision makers.What are this interviewers hot buttons that need to be avoided so that you are not taken off the list? (Be on the alert for clues during the interview.)What are the key aspects of this organization that you need to keep top of mind during this interview? (Be prepared. Every interview is its own entity. You cannot just give canned answers the same way for every company and for every interviewer.)One Customer at a TimeTreat each person you meet formally or informally as your customer. To get the job you want, which is one of the most important sales you will make, requires gaining approval from a series of people. The questions in the checklist above are very similar to the questions that every great salesperson answers. Securing a job is primarily based on your ability to sell who you are and what you have to offer.Seen as a sales process, you are not securing a job - that comes at the very end of the process when you show up the first day on the job. You are securing a sale, the sale of you. Make a series of successful closes, and ultimately you will end up in the job you want.

Why you should work on talking less instead of moreWhy you should work on talking less instead of moreUsing ur voice is core to understanding our power. Its integral in anchoring where we deserve to be. It helps us advocate for our own needs and the needs of those we love. 5 Exorbitant Costs of Making a Bad Hire
5 Exorbitant Costs of Making a Bad Hire5 Exorbitant Costs of Making a Bad HireThe manager is an essential part of an organization. Their responsibilities become more diverse depending on how elaborate their organizations chain of command is. But, every manager has three fundamental responsibilities. These responsibilities include Hiring Great EmployeesDeveloping Great EmployeesRetaining Great Employees If you dont get number one right, the rest becomesalmost impossible. A manager is better off spending more timehiring great employees. Prioritizing time towards hiring great employees means there will be a smaller chance that youll have to spend timedealing with difficult employees. While there are many ways to calculatethe cost of turnover(recruiting costs, training costs, severance, etc.), I would argue that the cost ofnot firinga badeanstalt employee far outweighs the turnover cost.This article outlines the high cost of making and keeping a bad hire in your organization. Dont Fal l for the Warm Body Fallacy When faced with open positions and under pressure to hire, or tolerating a poor performer because of a freeze on hiring replacements. Ive heard numerous managers say Well, a warm body is better than nobody. I would beg to differ. In most cases, a warm body (or bad hire) isfar worsethan leaving a position vacant until you can find a great hire or firing a poor performer, even though the person cannot be replaced. When a manager hires a bad employee, they are often blind to the employees shortcomings because the hire is a reflection of their ability to select employees. Theywantthat employee to succeed, and will often miss the warning signs of poor performance and become deckung if someone else points it out. Its possible to get candid feedbackif you suspect that you might have a blind spot. And, dont be worried about having to do this because other managers have done this before you. And, business is business, especially when theres a budget to consider. The Five Costs of a Bad Hire Impact on the Rest of the TeamWhen one employee is underperforming or carries around a consistently bad attitude, it has a devastating effect on the rest of the team. They have to pick up the slack, cover up mistakes, and put up with all kinds of obnoxious work habits from theirslacker coworker. Good employees will resent having to put up with the nonsense, morale will suffer, standards will drop to the lowest denominator, and eventually, great employees will quit.Impact on CustomersBad hires cant seem to grasp their job responsibilities, and even if they can, are always looking for shortcuts, or making customers upset due to their lack of customer service. The cost of gaining a new customer is way more expensive than keeping existing customers, and one negative interaction with a bad hire may cause that customer to walk away. Eventually, your brand and reputation will suffer. Time Spent on Performance ManagementA bad hire will suck up the time and f ocus of a manager. Instead ofcoaching and developing other employees, they get sucked into an endless cycle of having to listen to complaints from others, give corrective feedback,micromanaging, handing out discipline, and eventually having to be dragged through a painful disciplinary process. Trying to get a bad hire to meet even minimum expectations is like playing management whack-a-mole. One problem (showing up late) may temporarily go away, but it is soon replaced with another issue (calling in sick). The Managers ReputationEvery manager makes a bad hire now and then. No one is perfect. However, if a manager establishes a pattern of bad hires, then they get a reputation as an incompetent manager. No manager can make up for a team of bad hires, so it wont be long before the manager is the onebeing coached out of their job.The Cost of Turnover This is the quantifiable cost that most refer. These costs are real recruiting costs, relocation costs and training costs all add up to bi g numbers. Unfortunately, its these sunk costs that often causes managers to subscribe to the warm body theory. The Bottom Line These are just a few of the costs you incur from making and keeping a bad hire. Im sure there are more, depending on the schrift of organization and employee roles. It doesnt matter if you are hiring an entry-level minimum wage employee or senior executive. The cost of a bad hire is significant and can bring down a team, manager, or entire organization. While there are no guarantees, taking the time to cast a wide net anddoing your due diligence in selecting employeesis well worth the effort and will minimize the chances of a bad hire.

Quit Waiting If Your Boss Doesn#8217;t Recognize Your Work, Find a New Boss
Quit Waiting If Your Boss Doesn8217t Recognize Your Work, Find a New Boss Quit Waiting If Your Boss Doesn8217t Recognize Your Work, Find a New Boss Todays job market is tough. If youre trying to find a new job or get a promotion at your current job, you can probably relate. One of the most frustrating things, if not the most frustrating, is when your current babo is overlooking you.Perhaps the boss has created a new role that would be perfect for you. Youve been with the organization for five years, and this job is a step up from what youre doing today. Youre committed to the company and plan to be there for a while maybe even until retirement. The new role is an obvious progression for you but your boss doesnt binnensee it. Instead, they are too busy scouring the earth for the perfect candidate when the best person is right under their nose And even after youve pitched your idea, they arent interested.Ihave to be honest I dont have much patience for this waiting game. If youre good at what you do and youre doing your best, its time to consider moving on if your boss is unwilling or unable to recognize you. The exact reason why this is happening isnt the most important thing. Rather than try to fix a broken situation, why not refocus your energy? If this boss doesnt appreciate you, there is most likely someone else out there who will. Why not try to find them?The truth is, many companies dont value their existing employees as much as we all wish they would. The high turnover companies experience could contribute to this. The competitive environment were in doesnt help, either. The companies arent all to blame, but it doesnt really help you as an individual either way. Why not try to find a company and a boss that values their employees?I know it can be hard, especially if you were planning to stay at a company for the long haul. Switching companies can feel like a failure. It can feel like a loss a big one.But think of how you might feel if you did find a better situation, a better boss, and a better company. Ive never met someone who has made a positive switch and then said, Man, if only Id stuck around a little longer to see if I could have gotten my boss to like me Instead, each person says, Im so glad I made that change or Wow I wish Id had the courage to change jobs sooner. I dont know why I waited so long.I get it. Changing companies wasnt in your plan but neither was waiting to be told youre good enough. Let me put it this way If switching companies also meant more money and a better title, would you give it a shot? You will never know until you try.A version of this article originally appeared in the Memphis Daily News.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.

Critical Thinking - Why This Is an Essential Skill
Critical Thinking - Why This Is an Essential SkillCritical Thinking - Why This Is an Essential SkillCritical thinking is the process of carefully and systematically analyzing problems to find ways to solve them. It involves identifying several possible solutions and then logically evaluating each one, comparing them to one another on their merits, and then selecting the one that you conclude is the most promising. Why Should You Become a Critical Thinker? The ability to think logically about a problem in order to solve it is a valuable soft skill. Employers prefer job candidates who can demonstrate a history of using critical thinking skills. They want to have employees who can solve problems quickly, but more importantly, they want ones who can solve them effectively. Tips to Help You Develop Critical Thinking You may think there isnt enough time to take a slow and meakoranversd approach to problem solving. Examining issues, adopting stances on them, and then arguing your point will force you to think critically. Graduates arent out of luck. Practice your critical thinking while performing everyday activities. Before voting, for instance, learn about each of the candidates. Dealing with Employment #8220;Bait and Switch#8221;
Dealing with Employment 8220Bait and Switch8221 Have you been hired for a job only to find that your duties are completely different than what you signed on for? If so, then you may be the victim of an employment bait and switch. If you were initially promised exciting and high-profile projects at the time of hire but end up stuck performing daily menial tasks it may be time to make some moves to improve your situation. First things first, you need to figure out whether or not you are really in a bait and switch situation.There is a chance that you are first expected to work your way up to your promised position sort of an evaluation period to gauge your true abilities. It may also be possible that your anfhrer was not adequately aware of the duties that the position entailed and, thus, mistakenly informed you of a false set of expectations. Regardless of the cause, you should begin your investigation with a heart-to-heart with your boss.The conversat ion should be simple I expected to do this but am actually doing this. Bring up the official job description for which you were hired and get your bosss thoughts on what is expected of you and when you can start working the more desired tasks. Make sure you express your motivation and enthusiasm for the original job description and send out feelers to find out what you can do to get where you want to be. This talk may be all you need to set things straight.But you dont need to rely on others to get you where you want to go. Take some initiative of your own and tackle some of the issues that necessitate some of the menial aspects of your job. Try to automate tedious processes or at least make them more efficient. You may also create your own projects to solve more complicated problems around your office.If your boss is unable to help alleviate your issues, consider approaching your human resources representative about transferring to another department or team. You may even have the recommendation of your current boss if the bait and switch was unintentional. This approach alleviates the hassles of performing another job search and may place you in a position more suited to your interests, goals, and strengths.The option of last resort is to quit. If you can find no suitable alternatives within your current employer and your boss is unable or unwilling to accommodate your needs, you may need to find another job where the job description matches reality and you dont have to work so hard to feel fulfilled. Unless you signed an employment contract obligating you to work for a set amount of time, you should have no problems exiting your undesirable position with no professional repercussions. Never settle for an unfulfilling job and/or one that doesnt offer a challenge, especially one youve been tricked into accepting. There are always better options for those who are patient and persevering enough to brave the job market for more fitting employment.

Work-Life Balance and Your Employee Retention Strategy
Work-Life Balance and Your Employee Retention StrategyWork-Life Balance and Your Employee Retention StrategyAll business owners need to retain their top-performing employees to thrive. In addition to salary, the work environment is also a major factor when employees are deciding whether or not to stay with your firm.In the effort to create a positive work environment that makes employees want to stay, firms need the ability to be creative with policies that address work-life balance, including flexible work arrangements. Consider some ways you can offer employees low-cost benefits they will deeply appreciate.Benefits of alternative work optionsOne perk employees tend to strongly prefer is the ability to make alternative work arrangements - any scheduling pattern that deviates from the traditional Monday-through-Friday, 9-to-5 work week.Flexibility is the basic idea behind alternative work arrangements. You give employees some measure of control over their work schedules, thereby mak ing it easier for them to manage non-job-related responsibilities and maintain work-life balance. Theres also a business rationale behind the concept. When its easier for employees to deal with pressures on the home front, they are likely to be more productive when theyre on the job - and less inclined to jump ship if one of your competitors offers them a little more money.Hiring? We can help you find qualified candidatesdeparture HIRING NOWTypes of work-life balance arrangementsFlexible work arrangements can take a number of different formsTelecommuting - Telecommuting refers to flexible work arrangements in which employees - on a regular, predetermined fundament - spend all or a portion of the week working from home or from another non-company site.Flextime - Flextime refers to any arrangement that gives employees options for structuring their work day or work week. In the most extreme (and rarest) form, employees decide for themselves not only when they work but also for how long. More typically, though, employees operating under flexible work arrangements are expected to be on the job during certain core hours of the workday. Theyre given the opportunity to choose (within certain parameters) their own start and stop times - as long as they work the required number of hours each day.Compressed workweek - Under this arrangement, employees work the normal number of hours but complete those hours in fewer than five days. The most common variation of the compressed workweek is the so-called 4/10, in which employees work four 10-hour days instead of five eight-hour days. Employees often appreciate this arrangement as it provides an extra day at home, thus improving work-life balance - a topic explored further in the Robert Half report, The Secrets of the Happiest Companies and Employees.Job-sharing - As the term implies, job-sharing means that two part-time employees share the same full-time job. Salary and benefits may be prorated on the basis of what proportion of the job each worker shares. Apart from the obvious consideration (both people need to be qualified for the job), a successful job-sharing arrangement assumes that the employees sharing the job can work together harmoniously to make the arrangement work.Permanent part-time arrangements - The hours for these alternative work arrangements usually vary from 20 to 29 hours per week, with employees sometimes given the right to decide which days they work and how long they work on those days. The key attraction of this arrangement is that the employees may be entitled to company benefits, albeit on a prorated basis.Employees can become very invested in alternative work arrangements that they may not be able to work out with another employer. Take advantage of this work-life balance approach to build employee loyalty and job satisfaction and to promote a happier work environment.
